Mindhacks: DSM “lacks validity”, says NIMH Director Thomas Insel

May 4, 2013

The mental health blog Mindhacks has an excellent post on some quite staggering news. In a blog post, by it’s director Thomas Insel, the National Institute of Mental Health, which is a huge funder of mental health research, announced that it is breaking with the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic manual.

Insel published his post on 29 April 2013, just two weeks before the latest revision of DSM, DSM 5 is due for release. The DSM 5 site announces “DSM-5: The Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis” whereas NIMH leads with “Transforming Diagnosis”. The lines clearly drawn.

Splitting in the psyche and in communities can presage a creative and necessary evolution, especially when an entrenched framework reifies itself into an ideology, as perhaps in the case of DSM. It remains to be seen where the destructive impact will be felt.
