Burnout, Nervous Breakdown, Vital Exhaustion…

Call it what you will, it’s back and here to stay. So many people are living through the feeling of running on empty and if they don’t do anything about it there is a seemingly inevitable crash and burn coming up fast. We’ve tried to banish it with drugs, hold it at bay with business management strategies, patch over it with outsized bonuses, but the syndrome reasserts itself, from iPhone factory worker suicides, to bankers who crash the markets.

We cannot ignore our limits, like the Earth and other natural resources, we are not inexhaustible, we are finite. Work in
psychotherapy puts us in touch with our limits, we learn to see them as helpful, an essential part of who we are, and as central to our happiness.
