Counselling scheme lifts the gloom for depressed parents – Times Online

December 17, 2009

Place2Be is one of the most inspiring volunteer-based counselling projects in the UK. The charity places trained volunteer counsellors into schools to work with children who need emotional support. The scheme began with primary schools, but has now extended to include some secondary schools. More and more schools are requesting the service and Place2Be is actively recruiting volunteers. Now the service is extending to include support for parents.

Parents who have the free one-to-one counselling as part of a revolutionary programme in schools experience milder depression and improved relationships with their children.

Place for Parents is available in some of the most deprived areas of Britain. It enables couples and single parents to discuss their problems confidentially with trained counsellors and tracks their progress.

Among those who took part in 2007-08, the proportion of parents classed as clinically depressed fell from 80 per cent before the sessions to 29 per cent after the course.

The key thing to note is that Place2Be primarily provides psychodynamic / attachment theory based counselling and is achieving real results. I shudder at the thought of a government sponsored CBT scheme treating children like emotional assembly lines.
