Mental health issues among young ‘set to increase’

April 21, 2009

Mental health issues among young people are set to rise, it has been stated, potentially having implications for their adult lives and in areas such as employment.

Lucie Russell, a campaigns director at YoungMinds, said that a range of factors are having an effect on the mental wellbeing of teenagers.

These include “pressures such as cyber-bullying, fear of violence and strained family relationships”, she said.

Ms Russell noted that having a professional to talk to could help youths to tackle their problems and also lead to conditions being recognised early enough to prevent them escalating.

Over the course of a year, one in four people will experience some form of ill mental health such as anxiety or depression, according to the Mental Health Foundation.
