Did Clement Freud tell the funniest joke ever told?

April 20, 2009

From an article in The Telegraph

Sir Clement Freud was famous for many things and at the heart of most of them was his incredible sense of humour. At the Daily Telegraph we were lucky enough to benefit from that amazing deadpan delivery when he was a regular guest on the Telegraph World Cup Pubcast in 2006.<

On one occasion instead of discussing the upcoming Brazil versus France quarter final Sir Clement instead told the above joke. It provoked such gales of laughter at the time that it got us thinking – was this the funniest joke ever told?

Of course, there are many elements that have to come together to make a joke truly funny – a risky subject matter and an unexpected punchline help no end – and personal taste plays as big a part as anything else, but we think there is something special about the combination of a slightly rude joke coming out of the mouth of an 81-year-old gentleman.
